Greyhounds As Pets

m Yolo 3 2 - Greyhounds As PetsThis is my best friend, YOLO 😊

I love greyhounds and if I can do anything to promote them as pets after racing, it will be my way of saying thank you to all those greyhounds that have made my life special over the years.

They make the best pets for anyone who wants unconditional love, a dog that sleeps 20 hours a day and a best friend. Add to that, they are gentle, don’t need a lot of exercise, are happy to live in suburbia, and unlike other large dogs, they don’t get hip dysplasia and are renowned for their exceptional health.

Every month, I put new pictures up here of happily retired racing dogs to show my readers what to expect if they invite a greyhound into their house. So, if you’ve already adopted a greyhound, please, email me your favourite photo so we can encourage other people into our special club.  The ever-growing club where the only entry criteria is giving a loving greyhound a forever home.

Thank you, Linda, from Bay Area Greyhound Adoptions (Florida) who sent a little story along with each picture:

  1. (blue brindle) BABY with his favorite toy. Baby’s registered name is JJ Lazy Baby – not the best name for a racing greyhound. Baby had no interest in chasing the lure so she was adopted at a very young age.
  2. (red fawn) DARYL (Atascocita Daryl) is shown with his huge pillow, known as ‘Big Bear’. Daryl loves Big Bear and drags him around the house.
  3. (dark brindle) DEVA (True Deva) This photo was taken on the day she was adopted. She is with her owner’s daughter.
  4. (black) FLOPSIE. Flopsie was injured as a small pup and was not registered to race. We seldom get greyhound pups because they are valuable as potential racers. Flopsie came to us when she was 3 months old. She was adopted as a puppy and never raced.
  5. (white and red brindle) FLY  (Fly Girl) is playing with her favorite toy, her screaming monkey.
  6. (white and black) GANGSTER (NB’s Gangster) dispelling the myth that greyhounds can’t sit. Gangster went on to complete our prison training program and is living happily with his human family in Bradenton, Florida.
  7. (White and red) GHOST (Xtrem Ghost) was born on Halloween, so that is where his name comes from. The kennel name is Xtrem. Ghost is shown sprinting around his fenced yard. He had a bad eye infection when we got him, but a couple of weeks with antibiotic eye drops and ghost is now fine.
  8. (red) STRETCH (Oneco Garcon). He got his pet name because he was always stretching. The photo shows how athletic greyhounds are. They can go speeds in excess of 40 MPH for short distances. The family that adopted Stretch loved him so much they also adopted his sister.
